Though the phone is claimed to be free, a security deposit of Rs 1500 is to be paid. According to Jio the security deposit is important for avoiding potential misuse of data. The Jio phone security is 100% refundable after three years.

The Jio phone comes loaded with free unlimited messages, voice calls, and 4g internet. On a recharge of Rs 153, one gets free unlimited calls and texts with 500 MB data every day for 28 days. This amount of data can easily last for 3-4 hours of videos before reaching the high-speed data limit, according to Jio. The phone supports 22 Indian languages and voice command. It has a 2.4 QVGA 480×854 pixels screen and a micro SD card slot, a flashlight and FM radio. It is a single SIM handset, which supports only 4G and comes with Facebook and a web browser! WhatsApp is not yet said to be working on the phone.
