This Largest Malware Infects Over 36.5 Million Google Play Store Users – Judy Android Malware

Check Point Software Technologies, an Israeli multinational firm developing software and manufacturing hardware security products for the IT sector, a few days back published a blog unearthing how a Korean company makes money via unethical practices.

The company has over 41 Android applications, each incorporated with Judy, an auto-clicking adware, malware infected Google Play store to promote large amounts of fake clicks on advertisements.

As the world is still recovering from the menace of “WannaCry,” which spread across the globe badly affecting government departments, universities, hospitals, in more 100 countries, Judy has added fuel to the fire of ongoing debate on internet security in this modern age.

A recent report by Checkpoint announced Judy as the largest well-managed malware campaign found on the Google Play Store. All the malicious mobile apps, designed and developed by Korea-based Kinikini, and listed on play store under the banner moniker ENISTUDIO Corp, has an adware program to generate fraudulent clicks from user’s device.

The Global Reach of Judy

As per checkpoint, 36.5 million users are affected by this malicious adware fraud. Some of the malware-affected Android applications dwelt for several years now, said the checkpoint in its blog post. Furthermore, some apps published by other concerns also contained this fraudulent adware.

How It Works?

Upon download, the app would secretly register the user’s Android gadget to a remote and control server, in return receives a malicious payload having a JavaScript that starts this actual fraudulent process. The malware opens advertisement URLs’, thanks to the user while using the app will be redirected to an external website owing to hidden web pages. After the target website is launched, the malware present in the app put in practice the JavaScript code to locate and click on banners.

What Has Been the Response of Google by Checkpoint’s Recent Report?

After Checkpoint notified Google about this malicious campaign on play store, the apps depublished without a notice to the company.
